Here we imagine Europe !
08.02.2024 - 20.06.2024
La Gaîté Lyrique – Factory of our times has opened its doors wide to Europe, a horizon for democracy with fertile artistic and cultural terrain. Europe is also a “utopia” in 16th-century philosopher and humanist Thomas More’s sense of the word – an ideal society in the making, an “Eu-topia.”
We hold the view that Europe is the right scope for unraveling the questions of our times and imagining shared solutions in areas such as the ecological transition, migration, and inequality, as well as the social and political polarization stoked by tech giants. Europe is also a union of freedom and respect for fundamental rights, despite the rise of illiberal et authoritarian regimes.
Over the span of nearly five months during the run-up to the European elections – a vote crucial to the continent’s future – we will join together to paint a different picture of what an “ideal” Europe could look like, without turning a blind eye to its current trials and tribulations. We will cast its defining symbols in a new light, or perhaps even reinvent them to map out a new Europe more attuned to human sensibility than to politics. This search for sensibility has turned our gaze toward Eastern Europe, home to a creative revival led by a budding new generation of artists and activists.
It is important that we listen to and support these voices, especially at a time when the war waged by Russia in Ukraine has awakened a European consciousness and yearning for Europe in the East. It’s vital that we intertwine their stories with those of other young Europeans, through initiatives such as hosting the Ukrainian Institute, as well as an exhibition forging a written and photographic dialogue between the MYOP collective and Pen Ukraine.
Through talks, concerts, screenings and workshops, we hope to establish a platform that amplifies the voices of people across Europe who are creating independent media outlets, clubs and festivals with a purpose, or proposing alternative narratives amid looming censorship. From February to June 2024, we are transforming La Gaîté Lyrique in a laboratory for European togetherness, to envision and build a Europe-wide “eutopia” – the “good place” imagined by Thomas More. A space to kindle optimism and a desire to take action, to draw up solutions and paths forward by combining thinking, pop culture, and social engagement.
La Gaîté Lyrique – Factory of our times is kicking off Eu.topia in February! An entire weekend of workshops, talks and festive gatherings to explore our European connections and aspirations as we join together to build new utopias and symbols underpinned by a desire to redefine our idea of Europe.
A place for fun & social engagement
At first glance, partying and activism may not seem like a natural pairing. But La Gaîté Lyrique sees promise in breaking down barriers between practices and audiences. The artists, thinkers and activists central to the programming all have one thing in common: they speak their mind. They make their voices — and those of minorities and causes too often overlooked — heard in different ways, through words, music, dance, and the visual arts.
