A visual analysis analysis of the social condition of homosexual women in South Africa.
Zanele Muholi is also a filmmaker: along with Peter Goldsmid, she shot this documentary about her work as a photographer and her experiences as a «visual activist.» Compared to other countries on the African continent, the young democracy of South Africa emerges as particularly tolerant. Cape Town even has the reputation or being a «gay African paradise.» But not everything is this rosy, and certain areas remain dangerous for homosexuals. In ghettos and rural areas, lesbians are victims of corrective rape and ostracized by the community, and many prefer to remain discreet. Zanele Muholi adopts a more militant attitude. Difficult Love addresses the challenges facing black lesbians in the country today.• Documentary, 2010, 48 minutes
