In Johannesburg, masked nomads with old trolleys pick up the trash. Mj Turpin decided to meet them.
From the suburbs to downtown Johannesburg, MJ Turpin followed and filmed these nomads smuggled from Zimbabwe, Mozambique and rural provinces and brought here to collect waste. For his performance, the visual artist draws his inspiration from the harsh lives of these people who push around makeshift trolley carts hidden behind masks and who risk their lives to survive by making a meager but honest living. South Africa is still part of the third world...? For his production workshop, MJ Turpin invites participants to go glean trash in the streets of Paris for the construction of a First World trolley cart.• www.behance.net/m18j92t
